Target Stores to Sell Facebook Gift Cards Sep 5--Expanding Market Share, Zynga

Target stores have agreed to sell Facebook credits gift cards at their retail stores. On September 5 consumers will have the opportunity to purchase gift cards that enable them to obtain applications for popular social games on Facebook, such as Zynga’s Mafia Wars and FarmVille. This presents a great opportunity to expand on the current market share.

According to Target’s senior leadership, they will become the first brick and mortar store to carry the cards for retail sale.

Why is Target stores the first to sell Facebook gift cards?

The partnership with Target and Facebook is a logical one, and should be good for both their business models. It is a complimentary and simple relationship that is sure to be a good draw for those seeking stocking-stuffers for the holidays. Positive sales equates to more foot traffic, and virtual traffic for them both. This translates to expanded market share.

It also provides an easier and more secure way to purchase points for upgrades, and game-level access. Currently, on many of the games, a credit card is needed to purchase points. With identity theft on the rise, this makes for a safer option. All one needs to do is purchase the card in a Target store, activate it, and enjoy.

"With social gaming becoming increasingly popular, Facebook Credits gift cards provide an easy and convenient option for guests to purchase virtual goods," Mark Schindele, Target Corp.'s senior vice president of merchandising, said in a prepared statement.

Target stores will begin offering the Facebook credits gift card for sale on September 5, 2010. They will be offered in units of $15, $25 and $50, and are accepted by games such as Zynga's FarmVille and Mafia Wars; CrowdStar's Happy Aquarium and Playdom's City of Wonder.
