OLYMPIA, Wash. — A new state program that offers health insurance to small businesses has begun signing up members. It's called the Health Insurance

Getting less than five hours sleep a night makes healthy 17 to 24-year-olds three times more likely to suffer from mental health illnesses than their counterparts who get the recommended eight to nine hours sleep.

According to new research carried out by the George Institute of Global Health, insufficient sleep makes it more likely that mental health problems will become more persistent or in some extreme cases trigger mental health issues for the first time.

It was also found that every hour of lost sleep each night could have an impact on people's mental wellbeing.

Lead author, Professor Nick Glozier, said: "The study has revealed a number of links between mental health problems and lack of sleep among young adults."

According to the UK's Sleep Council, exercising regularly, creating a restful atmosphere in the bedroom and keeping regular hours can all help people get a better night's sleep.
